Mechanical Engineer resume examples

Show the part you designed, the tolerance, load or temperature it had to meet, and what changed once it reached production, because that's what hiring engineers read for first. The examples cover a product design engineer, a 2026 graduate with three co-op terms and a licensed HVAC engineer, so you can start from the job closest to yours.

A design engineer who owns parts from model to production

Haluk's resume fits a mechanical engineer with three to eight years in product design who owns assemblies rather than editing other people's drawings. His first bullet names the three product lines and about 140 active part numbers, so a reader knows the scope before reading any detail.

Most bullets follow the same order: the part, the analysis or test, then the production result. A stack-up found 2.1 mm of worst-case misalignment and the bracket redesign cut drawer gasket warranty claims 38%. A revised heater path, checked in an ANSYS thermal model, took anti-sweat heater draw from 42 W to 28 W per door. Copy that order for your own parts, and swap in the constraint your products are designed to.

There's no credentials section. A product design posting may not mention a license at all, so an FE or PE line is optional here rather than expected.

Examples for a new graduate and a licensed HVAC engineer

Choose by the jobs you're applying to, not by your current title. Building-systems postings can ask for Revit, HVAC design experience and a PE or a path to one, so an HVAC designer at any level should start from Marisol's and cut the leadership lines that don't apply yet. Graduates and engineers with under two years of full-time work should start from Palesa's.

Mechanical Engineer

Entry level: co-op terms, a capstone rig and the FE exam

Palesa's resume suits a 2026 graduate whose best evidence comes from co-op terms and a sponsored capstone. The capstone sits under Experience with a team size, a 450 lb load case and a budget. Three co-op terms share one entry and cover gearbox endurance testing and field-failure analysis. A summer machine-shop job sits last, and the credentials line reads "FE Mechanical Exam, Passed" with NCEES and the year.

  • Capstone listed as experience with budget and load case
  • Three co-op terms grouped under one employer
  • FE Mechanical exam passed, with issuer and year
Senior Mechanical Engineer, PE

Senior HVAC engineer with a Texas PE

Marisol's resume fits a licensed engineer at a building-systems consultancy who leads projects and other engineers. PE status appears after the job title and again in credentials with the state and year, above her earlier EIT certificate. Bullets name building types, fume hood counts and the ASHRAE standard each design met. The senior role leads with sealed drawings, then project size, proposal wins and the EITs she has mentored.

  • Texas PE with year, plus the earlier EIT certificate
  • Lab and hospital HVAC with Revit and load calculations
  • Proposal wins and EIT mentoring as leadership evidence

Match your keywords to your lane, then prove each one in a bullet

The mechanical engineer resume keywords that matter depend on which of three jobs you're applying for: product design, manufacturing or building systems. Each keyword needs a bullet that shows it in use, because a list such as "SolidWorks, ANSYS, GD&T" doesn't show whether you owned a design or only edited drawings.

Copy the tools and methods from the posting into your skills section, then make sure each one appears again in a bullet with the part, the constraint and the result. For a design role, write "Run tolerance stack-ups on drawer slide mounts" with the misalignment you found and what the fix changed, not "tolerance analysis" on its own.

For a plant or manufacturing role, name the line or robot cell, the shift you covered and the cycle time or scrap rate before and after. For building systems, name the building type and size, the system you designed and the standard it met, such as ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation rates.

Say which lane you're in within the first line of your summary. "Product design," "manufacturing" and "HVAC design" each tell the reader which set of skills to look for next.

Put co-op terms and the capstone under Experience, with the numbers an engineer would check

An entry level mechanical engineer resume should lead with the engineering work you did in co-ops, internships and your capstone, because that's the evidence a hiring manager has. List the capstone under Experience with your role, the team size, the sponsor and the dates, as Palesa does, rather than as one line under Education.

Give each project bullet the figures another engineer would want: the load case (a 450 lb design load, twice the full-hopper weight), the test conditions (5 fill levels and 3 tilt angles), the budget and what you delivered. Name the method you used, such as hand calculations, SolidWorks Simulation or a MATLAB script, so the reader can judge the analysis.

Group several co-op terms with one employer into a single entry and put "3 terms" in the title. Pick bullets that show different work across the terms, such as endurance testing in one and field return analysis in another, instead of repeating "updated drawings" for each.

Shop and hands-on jobs count. A summer running manual mills and lathes to ±0.005 in shows a design manager that you'll draw parts a machinist can make. Keep it to one or two bullets below your engineering roles.

A junior mechanical engineer resume with one or two years of full-time work should move the capstone into a single line or drop it, unless it shows design work the posting asks for and your job doesn't.

Write FE, EIT and PE status exactly as it stands

List licensure in a Credentials section, and add ", PE" after your job title only once a state board has licensed you. FE exam passed, EIT and PE are three different states, and the licensed engineers who read these resumes notice when they're blurred. Passing the NCEES FE exam doesn't make you an EIT. In Texas, for example, you apply to the state board for the EIT certificate as a separate step after you pass.

If you've passed the FE, use the exam's NCEES name and write "FE Mechanical Exam, Passed" with NCEES and the year, as Palesa does. Write "Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate" only after a board issues it, and name that board and the year. Some states call it Engineer Intern (EI), so use your board's term. Marisol lists her 2014 EIT certificate below her PE, so a reader can follow her path from FE to license.

For a PE, give the state, the year and "Active," and put it high on the page when a posting requires a license or the ability to get one within 12 months. If you passed one of the three NCEES Mechanical PE exams, naming it (PE Mechanical: HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, or Thermal and Fluids Systems) tells the reader which work you were tested on. Requirements vary by state, so check the board where you plan to practice before you write any eligibility date.

Show senior work through what you sealed, won and taught

A senior mechanical engineer resume shows leadership through the work the firm trusted you with: drawings you sealed, projects you led, proposals you wrote and engineers you trained. Put those in the first bullets of your current role, before design detail.

Give each one a count. Marisol writes that she seals drawings as engineer of record on about 10 projects a year and that 9 of 14 proposals won in 2025. A lead mechanical engineer in product design can name the product lines they own, the design reviews they chair and the change orders they approve each year.

Mentoring belongs on the page when it has an outcome. Say how many engineers you trained, on what, and what changed, such as EITs who went on to earn a PE or designers who moved from AutoCAD to Revit. "Mentored junior engineers" with no number tells the reader nothing they can check.

In a plant, leadership looks different. Name the line or launch you led, the technicians or shifts you directed, and the result, such as a new weld cell running at rate by a set date.

Keep earlier roles short. Two to four bullets each for jobs before your current one are enough, and your first role can shrink to the work that led to your license or specialty.

Give your experience bullets the most room, whatever template you choose

Any mechanical engineering resume template works if your experience bullets get most of the page, because that's where the tolerances, loads and test results go. Put your lane in the summary and, if you hold one, your license near the top, then let experience fill the rest.

Keep the skills list to tools, methods and standards you also show in a bullet, so a reader can check each one against your work. Give credentials their own section with the issuer and year, and list a standard such as ASHRAE 90.1 only if a bullet shows you designing to it.

Write skills as plain words, never bars or star ratings. "SolidWorks 4/5" tells a reader nothing about what you designed, while "SolidWorks PDM" next to a bullet about 140 part numbers does.

Keep CAD screenshots and drawings out of the resume file. Link to a portfolio instead, and include only work your employer or sponsor has cleared for sharing.
