Dental Assistant resume examples

Hiring dentists read a dental assistant resume for the credential first, then for the chairside duties it covers, and both depend on your state.

Each of the 12 examples follows one assistant in New York, Texas, Virginia, California or Florida, so pick the one that matches your state, setting and experience.

Six years of four-handed dentistry with a New York RDA license

Nomvula Zwane's resume puts the New York RDA license in the first line of the summary and in Credentials, then backs it with what a general practice checks: 8 to 10 patients a day, four-handed with two dentists, and the bitewing, periapical and panoramic radiographs she takes. Copy its order if you have several years in general dentistry and a state credential to show.

Dental Assistant

Pick by state, credential or schedule

Each resume is set in one state, and its credentials and chairside duties follow that state's rules. Match your state before you copy a duty line, then swap in your own employers, numbers and credential names.

Dental Assistant

Entry-level dental assistant with a Texas radiology certificate

Khanh Trinh's resume lists a 120-hour externship as the first job, with the practice size, procedures and daily sterilization volume in the bullets. The Texas radiology certificate and a BLS card sit in Credentials, and five years of bakery work show food safety logs and busy Saturday counters. Use it if you have just finished a certificate program and your externship is your only dental experience.

  • Externship listed as the first job, with total hours
  • Texas radiology certificate and BLS in Credentials
  • Bakery job written as cleaning logs and customer volume
Lead Dental Assistant

Lead dental assistant running a team of five

Lakshmi Venugopal's resume opens with the team: 5 assistants across 6 operatories and 3 dentists' schedules. Bullets name the infection control logs, a $7,500 monthly supply budget and a 4-week onboarding plan, and DANB's Radiation Health and Safety review course and exam back the radiographs taken in Virginia. Choose it if you already schedule other assistants, order supplies or train new hires and want a lead title.

  • Team size and chair assignments in the first bullet
  • Supply budget with a dollar figure
  • Virginia radiograph duties backed by DANB's RHS course and exam
Pediatric Dental Assistant

Pediatric dental assistant who came from childcare

Dorota Kaminska's resume shows a children's practice through its numbers: 20 to 25 children a day, tell-show-do with every new patient and recall visits booked at checkout. A toddler classroom job adds daily parent notes and calm drop-offs. As an unlicensed New York assistant, the duty bullets cover four-handed work and bitewing radiographs, both open to unlicensed assistants there. Use it for pediatric offices.

  • Daily patient count and tell-show-do in the bullets
  • Parent communication and recall booking
  • No credentials section for an unlicensed New York assistant
Oral Surgery Assistant

Oral surgery assistant with a Texas RDA

Emilio Zambrano's resume is built around the surgical day: 6 to 8 cases, named by type, each with a sterile setup and breakdown. It lists the CBCT and panoramic imaging the Texas radiology certificate covers and the post-op instructions reviewed with each patient and escort. Use it if you assist in oral surgery, or if you are moving there from general practice, as the earlier family practice job shows.

  • Surgical case types and daily count
  • CBCT and panoramic imaging tied to a Texas RDA
  • BLS listed with the year renewed
Orthodontic Dental Assistant

Orthodontic assistant in a high-volume California practice

Chaleo Sisavath's resume leads with volume: 35 to 45 patients a day in a 4-chair open bay across two offices. It splits the job at the date the California RDA was issued, so placing archwires and ligature ties appears only in the RDA role, next to the license and radiation safety course in Credentials. Use it for orthodontic or aligner-heavy practices where speed per chair matters.

  • Patient volume and minutes per visit
  • Separate roles before and after the RDA
  • Intraoral scans for aligner starts and refinements
Endodontic Dental Assistant

Part-time endodontic assistant in Florida

Kwaku Darko's resume shows a three-day week in an endodontic office: 6 to 8 root canal, retreatment and consult visits a day, with the microscope, apex locator and rotary files ready before each case. It also covers the insurance and treatment plan talks a specialty office needs. If a Florida ad asks for expanded functions or radiography certification and you hold them, add them to Credentials.

  • Workdays named in the summary
  • Microscope and rotary file setup
  • Insurance benefits and case presentation
Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions

Expanded functions assistant (RDAEF) in California

Jasleen Bajwa's resume shows the step from dental assistant to RDA to RDAEF as three roles. Each role adds the duties the new license opened: sealants and coronal polishing as an RDA, then placing restorations and final impressions as an RDAEF. Credentials list both licenses plus the radiation safety and infection control courses. Use it if you hold an extended functions license and run a restorative chair.

  • Three roles that track each new license
  • Restorations placed per day
  • RDA, RDAEF and course credentials listed separately
Certified Dental Assistant

Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) in Texas

Temitope Oyelowo's resume shows the DANB work-experience route: a high school diploma, 3,500 logged hours at a community clinic, then the CDA. The summary says the Texas radiology certificate came through DANB certification and the Jurisprudence Assessment, and the current role adds extern mentoring and lab case tracking. Use it if you earned the CDA on the job instead of through an accredited program.

  • CDA and Texas radiology certificate with years
  • 3,500-hour pathway shown in the earlier job
  • Mentoring two externs each term
Dental Assistant

Career change from pharmacy technician

Giorgos Papadakis's resume keeps six years of pharmacy work and rewrites it for a dental office: medication and allergy records, rejected insurance claims, clean technique and 80 to 100 patients a day. The new dental assisting certificate opens the summary, and the skills list adds chairside and sterilization work. Use it if you are moving into dental assisting from pharmacy, medical assisting or another patient-facing job.

  • Dental assisting certificate first in the summary
  • Pharmacy bullets that point to dental office tasks
  • Unlicensed New York role, no credentials section
Dental Assistant and Treatment Coordinator

Dental assistant with front office and treatment coordination

Bahar Karimi's resume shows a week split between the chair and the treatment coordinator desk at a 9-office dental group. Bullets name the insurance benefits explained, the treatment plans presented and the 15 to 20 appointments booked a day, plus a treatment acceptance figure. Use it for hybrid roles at multi-location practices whose ads ask for insurance education and case presentation.

  • Chairside and front office split in the first bullet
  • Treatment acceptance rate before and after
  • 15 to 20 appointments booked a day
Dental Assistant

Part-time evening and Saturday dental assistant

Kekoa Nakamura-Pruitt's resume names the exact shifts, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, so an extended-hours clinic can see the fit at a glance. The dental hygiene degree in progress explains the schedule, and DANB's Radiation Health and Safety review course and exam back the Virginia radiograph duties. Use it if you work part time around school, family or another job.

  • Shift days and weekly hours in the resume
  • Hygiene degree in progress with expected year
  • DANB RHS course and exam for Virginia radiographs

List the credential your state issues, by its exact name

List your credential by its full title, the board or body that issued it, and the year. States typically don't license entry-level dental assistants, but states that allow expanded duties such as coronal polishing require a credential for them, and the titles and rules differ from state to state.

Put the short form in your summary too, such as 'Texas RDA' or 'California RDAEF', because hiring managers scan the first lines for it. Florida isn't in the table. The Florida examples list no state credential, and if an ad asks for expanded functions or radiography certification, as one Orlando endodontic ad does, list the certificate you hold under the exact name printed on it.

StateCredential to listWhat it coversExample
New YorkRegistered Dental Assistant (RDA) license, New York State Education DepartmentOnly a licensed RDA may use the title. Licensed and unlicensed assistants may assist four-handed with the dentist present and operate x-ray equipment under a licensed dentist's supervision.Nomvula Zwane (licensed), Dorota Kaminska and Giorgos Papadakis (unlicensed)
TexasDental Assistant Radiology Certificate, Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. The board also calls it a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) license, so list both names.Needed to position or expose dental x-rays. Requires a high school diploma or GED, fingerprints, a hands-on BLS course, a human trafficking prevention course, and either a board-approved course and exam or current DANB certification plus the Jurisprudence Assessment.Khanh Trinh, Emilio Zambrano, Temitope Oyelowo
CaliforniaRDA or RDAEF, Dental Board of California, plus your radiation safety and infection control coursesAn RDA may place archwires and ligature ties and, after a Board-approved course, apply sealants. Only an RDAEF may place and finish fillings or take final impressions for crowns and bridges. Anyone who takes x-rays needs a Board-approved radiation safety course.Chaleo Sisavath (RDA), Jasleen Bajwa (RDAEF)
VirginiaDANB's Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) review course and exam, a radiation safety course and exam from a CODA-accredited program, or ARRT certificationLets a dental assistant I or II place and expose radiographs.Lakshmi Venugopal, Kekoa Nakamura-Pruitt
NationalDANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)Three exams (RHS, ICE and GC). Open to graduates of a CODA-accredited program, or to high school graduates with 3,500 hours of work experience, with current hands-on CPR/BLS.Temitope Oyelowo

Name the radiograph, the procedure and the credential behind it

Write each regulated duty as the exact procedure, how often you do it, and the credential that allows it in your state. 'Took x-rays' could describe a student or an RDA with ten years at the chair. 'Bitewing, periapical and panoramic radiographs for 10 to 14 patients a day' tells a hiring dentist what you can do on your first day.

Put each duty in the role where you held the credential for it. Jasleen Bajwa's resume lists sealants and coronal polishing under the RDA job and restorations under the RDAEF job, and Chaleo Sisavath's archwire placement appears only after the RDA date. For procedures you help with but don't perform, start the bullet with 'Assist with' and name the procedure, as the orthodontic example does for bracket bonding. Never list a duty your state doesn't let you perform, because the office can't legally assign it to you.

Duty line with its credential

Expose full-mouth series, bitewings and panoramic radiographs for 10 to 14 patients a day. Credentials: Dental Assistant Radiology Certificate (RDA), Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, 2022.

Vague duty line

Responsible for x-rays, sterilization and assisting the dentist with procedures.

Prove a dental specialty with its procedures, equipment and patients

Show a specialty through the procedures you assist with, the equipment you set up and the patients you see, because a specialist reads for those before your job title. Put the specialty in your title and summary, then give it at least three bullets with daily numbers.

Moving into a specialty from general practice? Lead your current role with the specialty procedures you already assist with, such as extractions if you're applying to an oral surgery group.

SpecialtyWhat the hiring office reads forLine to adaptExample
PediatricsChildren per day, behavior guidance, how you talk to parents, recall bookingUse tell-show-do with each new patient before treatment begins.Dorota Kaminska
OrthodonticsPatients per day, minutes per visit, impressions, intraoral scans and the bonding and wire steps you assist withTake intraoral scans for aligner starts and refinements.Chaleo Sisavath
EndodonticsMicroscope and rotary file setup, file tracking, insurance and treatment plan conversations, referral reportsSet up the operating microscope, apex locator and rotary files before each case.Kwaku Darko
Oral surgeryCases per day by type, sterile setup and breakdown, CBCT and panoramic imaging if your credential covers it, post-op instructionsSet up and break down the surgical suite for 6 to 8 cases a day.Emilio Zambrano

Put externship hours and procedures where experience would go

List the externship as your first job, with the practice, city, dates and total hours. Khanh Trinh's resume names 120 hours at a 5-chair family practice in the first bullet, then the procedures assisted, the daily sterilization volume and the charting software.

Use numbers even from a short placement: patients per day, operatories turned over, instruments processed. Name the practice software you charted in, such as Dentrix or Eaglesoft. If your state has already issued a credential, such as a Texas radiology certificate, add it to Credentials with the year.

Keep your earlier job and write it as habits a dental office needs. Food service shows cleaning and labeling logs, retail shows customer volume, and pharmacy work shows medication and allergy records, as Giorgos Papadakis's resume does. Leave out duties with no link to patients, records or cleaning.

End your summary with the hours you can work and the setting you want. Some offices hire with no dental credential at all: a pediatric practice in Endicott, New York, advertised for an assistant with no dental experience who is comfortable with children. If that fits you, name your work with children in the summary.
