Hiring supervisors read your license title, state and expiration date first, then the size, population and setting of your caseload.
Each example pairs a different license with a different setting: in-home child welfare in Houston, critical care at a Chicago hospital and two Illinois elementary schools.
Yesenia Montalvo has five years of in-home safety casework in Houston and a Texas LMSW. The license opens her summary and has its own credentials entry with the issuing agency and expiration month, so a supervisor can confirm it in seconds.
Her bullets give caseload size, children's ages, visit frequency, court deadlines met and cases closed, and none of them contains a detail that could point to a real family. Spanish appears in the work itself, as visits and safety plans done in Spanish, not only as a line in the skills list.
Adapt it if you work in child protective services, foster care, kinship or family preservation. Swap in your own caseload range, the hearings you prepare for and the services you refer families to.
Hospital and school examples with Illinois licenses
Rasheed works inpatient with a clinical license, and Hannah holds a social work license plus a separate educator license for schools. Choose the setting closest to the job you want, then rewrite the credentials section with your own state's titles.
Hospital social worker with an Illinois LCSW
Rasheed Kowalczyk's resume suits an LCSW aiming for a lead or supervisory hospital role. It names the ICU and step-down unit with their bed counts, gives a weekly discharge number and lists the post-acute settings patients went to. One bullet measures a follow-up call program by the share of patients reached, and another shows field instruction for MSW interns. His earlier home health and hospice job, held as an LSW, fills the years before his 2020 LCSW.
Illinois LCSW listed with issuer and expiration
12 to 15 discharges a week, documented in Epic
Field instructor for two MSW interns a year
School social worker with an Illinois LSW and PEL
Hannah Kim's resume fits a school social worker with credentials from two Illinois agencies: an IDFPR social work license and an ISBE Professional Educator License. Each has its own credentials entry with an end date. Her bullets count evaluations, IEP students and counseling groups, and the internship entry gives a newer graduate school-based experience to point to. Use it if your next job is with a district rather than an agency.
Illinois LSW and PEL listed as separate credentials
20 to 25 socio-emotional evaluations a year
School internship listed as a job with three bullets
Write the license with its title, state, issuer and expiration
List your license with its full title, the state, the issuing agency and the expiration month, because the license decides which roles you can legally take, such as clinical diagnosis versus case management. Requirements vary by state, so use the exact title your state issues. Texas has the LBSW, LMSW and LCSW, Illinois has only the LSW and LCSW, and New York has the LMSW and LCSW.
Put the license in two places. Name it in the first line of your summary, as in 'Licensed master social worker in Texas with five years of family-based safety casework'. Then give it a full credentials entry: 'Licensed Master Social Worker (Texas LMSW), Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council, 2021, expires Mar 2027'.
If you hold a second credential from a different agency, give it its own entry with its own issuer. An Illinois school social worker lists the IDFPR license and the ISBE Professional Educator License separately, because the district checks both and the social work license does not replace the educator license.
If you're working toward the LCSW, list the license you hold now and add a second line for the clinical license with your progress: 'Illinois LCSW in progress: 1,900 of 3,000 supervised clinical hours, expected June 2027'. Keep LCSW out of your job title and headline until the state issues it, because employers check the state's license lookup.
If you've passed the ASWB exam and your application is with the state, write the license title followed by 'application submitted' and the month. ASWB runs the exams, but only the state issues the license, so a passed exam is not a license line on its own.
Describe caseloads by size, age group and setting, never by family story
Give the number of clients or families, the population and the setting in one line, and leave out anything that could point to a real person. Names, initials, a child's age paired with a diagnosis, school names, street names and the date of a specific incident can identify a family even when no name appears.
In child welfare, give families at a time, the children's age range, the reason for referral and how often you visit. In a hospital, give the unit, its bed count, discharges a week and where patients went next. In a school, give the number of students with IEP social work minutes, the grades you serve and evaluations a year.
Report outcomes across a whole caseload or a year, such as cases closed with safety goals met, a unit's 30-day readmission rate or attendance for a group of students. A single child's progress is a story your supervisor knows, and a stranger could recognize it too.
Size, population and setting, with a caseload-wide result
Carry 18 to 22 families with children from birth to 17 on in-home safety services, visiting each family at home at least twice a month. Closed 31 cases in 2025, 25 of them with safety goals met and the children still living at home.
Vague, and it points to one family
Managed a large caseload of at-risk families. Helped a single mother of three get housing near her 6-year-old daughter's school after the girl's hospital stay in March 2024.
Name the documents, systems and meetings your setting runs on
A hiring supervisor scans for the work they will hand you on day one: court reports in child welfare, discharge plans in a hospital, socio-emotional evaluations in a school. Use the names your setting uses, and give a number for each.
If you've worked in more than one setting, keep each job's bullets in that setting's terms, and lead your summary with the setting of the job you're applying for. Name a records system such as Epic only if you documented in it yourself. The outpatient row is general guidance for a setting none of the examples covers.

Show the MSW or BSW with its concentration and your field placement
List your social work degree with its concentration or advanced standing and the graduation year, and add 'CSWE-accredited' when the posting asks for it. Hospital ads may name accreditation because most states require a degree from a CSWE-accredited program for licensure. Leave the CSWE note off a degree in another field, such as a BA in psychology.
If your BSW let you finish the MSW in one year, write 'Master of Social Work (MSW), Advanced Standing' so a supervisor sees why the dates are short. If you came to the MSW from another major, list the MSW first and the earlier degree below it. A BSW is not required before an MSW, and a related job such as a youth program role belongs in experience.
With under about five years of paid social work, list your field placement as a job: 'MSW Intern' or 'School Social Work Intern', the agency, dates and two or three bullets of real work, such as intakes completed, groups co-led and evaluations drafted. School applicants in Illinois should show a school-based placement, because postings for school roles prefer prior school experience.
After about five years of paid social work, cut the placement to one or two bullets that relate to the job you want, or remove it. Keep it if it shows something your paid jobs don't, such as a language or a population you want to work with again.
